Cathedral of the Good Shepherd Singapore

Singapore’s oldest Catholic place of worship, this cathedral was built between 1843 and 1847. It was administered by French Missionary Father Jean-Marie Beurel, who also established the Convent of the Holy infant Jesus and St. Joseph’s Institution. Designed by noted colonial architect D.L. McSwiney in a Latin cross pattern, the church combines a Renaissance-style exterior with Doric columns, Palladian porches, and a beautifully crafted timber ceiling. The octagonal steeple was a later addition by Charles Dyce.

The church. which was accorded cathedral status in 1897, served as an emergency hospital during World War II and was listed as a national monument in 1973. Three interesting buildings stand within the church compound. The Archbishop’s House, a 19th century double-story bungalow with a projecting portico, casement windows, and enclosed verandas, is a simple structure in contrast to the cathedral. The Resident’s Quarters, a U-shaped single-story building with Doric columns, and the Priest’s House are more ornate and decorated with elaborate plasterwork.
